An Interview with Ryan Holmes: Founder of Hootsuite
Ryan gained valuable experience in entrepreneurial and startup ventures, business management, and marketing as owner of a restaurant chain, a tourist adventure business, and online store with 3m+/year revenues.
How and where did you get the idea for your company?
My current project, HootSuite, was launched from my digital agency, Invoke, in December 2008. It spawned out of a problem we needed to solve in managing social media for multiple clients and accounts. Rapid growth led to the spin-out and founding of HootSuite in December 2009.
Who’s one person you’ve always looked up to?
Despite the current media infatuation, I have always been a huge fan of Steve Jobs.
What’s the most important action you took that you believe brought success to your business?
Following my passion. HootSuite is my fifth business and it has taken as many tries to find the right alignment of entrepreneurial skills and my passions.
What’s the number one tip you would offer to a young entrepreneur?
Partner up. The tendency for many entrepreneurs is to try to do everything themselves, but by partnering with someone whose skill set compliments your own, you can stick to what you do well and tackle challenges together.
