Build Your Personal Brand Using Twitter Chats

TwitterWhat if I told you there was one place where you could go every week and easily position yourself as an expert on a particular topic? And on top of that, what would you say if I told you that you could gain a ton of followers after just an hour? Chances are, if you’re serious about growing your personal brand, you’re extremely interested in what I’m talking about.

Introducing, Twitter chats

Twitter chats are weekly interactive chats on Twitter where people interested in a particular topic come together and tweet under the same hashtag. The chats usually last for an hour, and you have the opportunity to connect with and make followers out of hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

The first Twitter chat I attended was Blogchat (#Blogchat), which is where bloggers come together every Sunday night and discuss different blogging topics. When the chat started, I was a little intimidated because all I saw were hundreds of new tweets every minute. But after a while, I got the hang of it and I started jumping right into the conversation. At the end of the chat, to my surprise, I was one of the top tweeters of the night. From that, I gained over 20 followers which wasn’t too bad. But more importantly, I had introduced myself to hundreds of people as a blogging “expert.” Boy did I fool them!

How to Get Started

First, you want to find a chat on a subject that you know about. If you’re a blogger, join a blogchat (or one of the other blog related chats throughout the week). Check out this schedule of the various Twitter chats that happen throughout the week.

Second, to prepare for a twitter chat, get some sort of Twitter client like TweetDeck so you can easily keep up with all the tweets and reply to one if need be.

Third, make sure to become a part of the conversation. Share your knowledge, ask questions, and refrain from self-promoting. If you build yourself up as an expert, they’ll find your content naturally. And remember to include the chat’s hashtag with every tweet you send out!
