How to Tell what Theme your Favorite Blog is Using

Hey everybody, this is the 1st video guest post on this blog, by Don Power, please leave feedback.

Steps to tell what theme your favorite blog is using:

  1. Go to the blog.
  2. Right click, view source.
  3. Control F, search theme.
  4. Copy theme name, search it on Google.
  5. You now have as much information as you want.
  • http://fwebde.com/ Eric B.

Because some theme names, the names have to be modified a bit to work nicely as a directory name. Instead, look through the source for for their style.css file. At the top of that file, there will be more information about that theme, including the “official” name, a description of the theme, the author, and the version.

Neither of these methods will work on blogs with custom themes, though, such as my own.

      Thanks for your comment Eric!

I didn’t know about looking up the style.css in case the theme was renamed or customized. Great tip!

      Thanks again!

This should be quite helpful for new bloggers. As Eric mentioned, you can also look at the source of the CSS file, which you can find when you view the source of the page. For instance, if you view the CSS file for this site, http://ben-lang.com/wp-content/themes/headlines/style.css, you will see that the theme description also includes the link to the theme’s home page and the designer’s site.

Of course as Eric also says, with custom themes there may be less info. On my stylesheet, you can see that I’ve named my Theme “coolwidgets” but the link simply takes you to my home page as I’ve not made my theme available for distribution, but tweaked it specifically for my own use.

      Hi Heidi!

Nice to see you here at Ben-Lang.com! Thx for checking out the post.

One of the great things about being a newbie blogger is what you can learn once you’ve decided to take actio nand actually blog!!!

You might not have all the answers but once you at least START, you end up getting all this great feedback from folks who know even more tips and tricks about how to be successful!

The video I did here for Ben is based on research that I discovered on my own – as a newbie blogger intersted in finding out what cool themes other bloggers were using.

The fact that I now know a lot more about this process than when I first created this video is a cool byproduct!

So, thanks for your comment and your tips on hoe to find out even more information about what theme your favorite blogger us using!

Not only is your video post very good for us newbie bloggers but your commenters as well, particularly Eric and Heidi, have complemented it with additional information. In the past, my only means of knowing what theme a blog is using is by checking out the footer. If it’s not there, I do the tedious and time-consuming task of looking for other blogs that look like it and see if its theme name is identified in the footer.

Great Post Ben.But I would like to say that not always you can find the theme name via “source code” , because most bloggers rename their theme names.Any ways to find out the theme name in this case?

      Hey Copy-Blogger!

It looks like the comment from Heidi Cool, above, provides a way for you to get information aboutn the them right from the style.css file being used on the blog.

Presumably, even if the blog author changes the name of the theme, the sourcre file referring to the theme would still contain the relevenat name and links to the orginal theme name.

Thanks for your question and comment (and thanks to Heidi Cool for the additional tactic!)

Nice Video, now i can find a good theme for the blog i am working on. Thanks a lot Don =)

    Hey Don,

Would you share how you create your video posts? What software you use to capture the screen, how you edit yourself into the screen share, etc.

Great post here and I am now subscribed both here and to your blog.

I would love to hear Bens thoughts on the merits of the themes, whether it is important to buy a theme or use a free one. I myself am debating the whole Thesis / Woo right now as Thesis is more for me a coder and Woo is more for someone who wants it pretty out of the box.

haha good catch, I always try to find the theme by looking at the fotter. Now I have a sure fire way. I sometimes like other sites and wonder what software they are using. So I will try this now on, for example, directory scripts. Good catch
