I Know Everything About You – Is It What You Want?

Right now is the time you should start building your personal brand. Are you in high school? Build your brand. Are you in college? Build your brand! Right now! With the rising climb of social networks on the Internet, the way we think of privacy is changing. People can find out all sorts of information about you. Why not make them find what you want to find?

Increasingly, employers are going online to look up employees before hiring them. The same thing goes with customers thinking of buying a product or using a service from a company. Your personal brand and business brand are becoming one in the same. This is why personal branding and online reputation management are becoming more important in today’s world.

Here are some tips to start building your brand and manage your online reputation.

Own Your Property

Register domains. If you’re building a personal brand, normally, yourname.com or your-name.com is enough. Try buying .net and .org as well so you can control your name. If you have a name like John Smith, you’ll obviously have to get creative and brand yourself off that domain. If you’re a company, make sure not only to register your brand name but also domains such as ‘brandsucks.com’. With Google suggest, searches along the lines of “brand scam” and “brand sucks” are becoming more popular, so controlling those search results as well will help your brand out immensely.

Manage Your Property – “Social Mediatize”

Be a content creator. Pumping out content is the biggest way to build and control your brand. Make sure that you are on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social networks. But just being there is not enough. You have to produce quality content that interests you and your readers/followers as well. Managing these can be a drag sometimes, but tools such as HootSuite and Cotweet can easily help you manage all of them from one user interface.

Also, keeping a blog that is updated regularly is a big key to success. Use it to write about whatever fits you. And if you ever have to respond to a situation that arises with your personal/company brand reputation, you can use it (in conjunction with social media) to control the situation in your favor.

Get Connected Offline

My last tip would be to get involved offline as well. If you have a profession set in your mind that you want to be in or you are already in a profession, get involved in a local organization of fellow professionals and start to network with them. This will help you make great connections that can help you later in your career.

Final Takeaways

It’s important to keep monitoring your brand and be constantly keeping up with content creation. Set up a schedule for yourself and stick to it. Otherwise, you may find yourself falling behind saying: “Oh, I’ll catch up on that tomorrow”. When tomorrow becomes next week and next week becomes next month, you’ve screwed yourself and your brand. By constantly managing your brand and reputation now, you’ll be in a much better position to react against personal and/or company attacks.

Getting involved in social gatherings ‘offline’ is as important as building a personal brand online. Everyone should think about it and occasionally go out of home to meet others to show that they do exist in real world. :D

Aminul. Thanks for the comment. Many people only think about branding themselves online but this is still an offline world as well so being present in both places is so important.

So important man! Solid work here. I tell my fellow students all the time to start branding themselves and yet many still don’t — their loss. Those that actually do see the results.

Thanks Alex. It really is there loss. The younger that you start branding yourself, the better. And even if you change you’re mind on what career path you want, it still helps to have a brand going.

Networking is vital, off and online :) I would go as far as to say if you are debating between college & building a personal brand ditch formal ed and instead develop the business of you – it’ll serve you better, longer.

Or better yet, do both at the same time! :)

Wow where do I start? this is one of my favorite subjects so Kevin thank you for this Post I enjoyed reading this immensely!
Branding yourself is vitally important in the Online Blogosphere!
I myself am a very new Blogger as I have had my own name as a domain for my blog since December 2009 so my Authority on the subject is rather small but hey its heading in the right direction!
I once owned a domain called Viral Cash Marketing dot Info as I thought that it would get me a lot of Traffic and a Lot of Followers. But then I thought about how I would feel about visiting that site for the first time. In the end that blog fell over!
I changed my mindset and now have my own Name as my Blog! In my opinion a blog is a Website about the Person that owns and manages it so the blog should represent You!
My Blog is my Baby and I love it to Bit’s I hope that I have branded myself so that people think they know a little bit about me and What I am about!
I have recently discovered 2 apps for Twitter that help you brand yourself and your Blog 1 helps you put Video’s on your Profile while the second leaves links back to your site when you send a Tweet!
I Agree with you Kevin that just having a Blog or site on its Own is not enough! Me personally am on FB, Twitter, PeopleString, Linkdin and loads more as well at using lots of Apps for Twitter like MMT, and Speedfollow, I have Written an eBook (already after 3 onths hey) for people wanting to brand themselves and set up their own blog! and I comment and also guest post on other blogs.
ok this comment sounded a bit spammy and self promoting, but hey thats what its all about as well as helping as many people with their self branding as possible.
I hope a lot of aspiring bloggers out there find your post helpfull! Many thanks for posting this!
    All My Best

Yea I do make long comments usually. hey I got a lot to say. Like i say above I am aiming to be the UK’s top blogger by 2011 so the more comments I make on different posts the better!
I Think that its all about being helpfull and getting your name out there!

One thing to keep in mind is that with employers and everyone else able to find you online (even if you don’t want them to), you really need to be careful about the personal brand you develop. If a subject is generally taboo at a dinner table with new acquaintances, it might be something that would put a future employer off. So, be considerate about what you put on the web.

Great addition Alphabetix. It is important to censor yourself somewhat but it’s also important to actually be yourself. If someone wants to find out about you online, they can now.

Great tips, Kevin. Very great tips :) . An advice I will also give is that you should also try to use the username you use at one social site at every other social site so that you’ll be recognized everywhere you go on the web. Using different usernames everywhere you go wouldn’t help you build a brand cos you’ll be a different person everywhere you go and that wouldn’t make you recognized.

Shirley – I love your addition! And also being sure to interlink your social sites will help greatly for people that want to connect with you through a different medium.

I am a college student and I am just learning now how important personal branding is. Not many people in my generation have the idea that you need to work for your success, and that doesn’t just mean a degree. It means personal dedication and, most importantly, self confidence and consistent image.

A local Pittsburgh radio station is having some kids on air next Friday and I’m sure they’ll be talking along the lines of this subject… it’s on The American Entrepreneur on Friday April 9th from 3 to 6 pm… you can tune in online at http://www.TAEradio.com.

    • http://www.startupbizblog.com Kevin

Hey Mike, Thanks for reading. I’m in college myself as well and I definitely see what you mean by other kids not really getting it yet. They’ll learn and fortunately for us we’ll be ahead of the curve. :)

Nice article — I know I’m a few days late on this but I work for Dan Schawbel, the Gen-Y personal branding expert. I’ll feature this link over on the Facebook page tomorrow (today? it’s late!)

Hopefully that’ll add to the discussion you started here because you make some great points that I don’t think we’ve highlighted to our Fans yet.

    Keep it up!

Really enjoyed reading this article it is filled with good material and useful tips, especially for Entrepreneurs!

Speaking of, I enjoy listening to Ron Morris’ The American Entrepreneur! you can Listen Live at http://www.TAEradio.com.

I heard he will be speaking to Jeff Kinney, author of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” on Thursday, April 8th @ 5pm.

This should be pretty interesting. I hope that he tells his story, it would be nice to learn more about the man behind the books. Hey, I may even be able to call and actually talk to him (wishful thinking, but its worth a try, LOL)!

The future of business and showing off your portfolio really will be your online involvement.

No business owner wants to read a boring resume anymore, they want to see what you’ve done, how you interact with your peers and that you show something remarkable.

Participating in social networks, creating content, writing on your blog, producing videos, running a podcast – these are the things which will ‘wow’ your future employer.

It’s also what will help you develop the mindset to start your own business. Get out there and claim your identity, make something for yourself!
