Stay Healthy, Work Comfortably – 3 Ergonomic Mice Giveaway

For this giveaway I decided to team up with SmarthFish Technologies, an innovative technology company geared towards healthy electronics products. You have the chance to win one of three ergonomic mice, their most popular product.

Why is this contest on EpicLaunch?

Most entrepreneurs spend a lot of time sitting at their desks in front of their computers, whether it be for their website, e-commerce, blog etc. It’s easy to overlook personal safety when doing so. Working on the computer for long hours and sitting incorrectly can result in all kinds of painful conditions, physically and mentally, regardless of age. The official terminology for this is Repetitive Strain Injury.

So we are giving away three ergonomic mice that help prevent developing Repetitive Strain Injury. Thank you Jack Atzmon, CEO of Smarthfish Technologies, for providing these great prizes.

In order to stay healthy while you spend long hours on the computer everyday is to stay away from junk food.

Eating junk food and sitting in front of the computer can make you become lazy and you will gain weight very quickly.

Another tip is to do some exercise before and after using the computer. :)

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

      Hey Kharim,

For sure, I try to do that a lot :) Helps out so much.

  • http://www.murlu.com Murlu

As someone that’s in front of the computer throughout work (design, product launch, etc) and coming home to multiple blogs and online projects, I can’t say I’m the BEST at keeping in shape – got a little gut – but I have found some ways to stay healthy while being in front of the computer all the time.

I’m going to break the comment into two parts:

    1. Physical Health
    2. Mental Health

    Physical Health

    1. Proper setup – although you’ll be sitting at your desk for hours, it shouldn’t mean that you’re over stressing your body – keep all your supplies in short reach, sit comfortably and keep your keyboard level to avoid carpel tunnel.

    2. Do a little stretching – every few hours, stretch both your body and eyes – these two things are the most strained – flex around and roll your eyes for a minute or two and you’ll feel refreshed.

    3. Don’t just snack – the image of a computer geek in front a computer with a tower of soda is implanted in our minds – go against the grain by keeping water, healthy food or just omit food all together away from your work area.

    Mental Health
It’s important to remember that your mental health is just as important to your overall health. A negative mindset will create a downward spiral which leads to low physical health.

Here are some quick tips for mental health:

    1. Take regular breaks – perhaps every 2 hours for 15 minutes – this lets your mind recharge and keeps you focused once you got back in.

    2. Keep the mood light – If you’re working constantly in front of the computer, don’t surround yourself with negativity – clean up around your desk, put on relaxing music and hang up items that remind you of good times.

    3. Set milestones (often) – it’s a downer when you get to the end of the day and all you felt like you did was sit at the computer – set milestones so you can reflect back and feel better and ready for the next day.

This comment may be a little bit more than you were expecting and I guess went past just a single tip.

In that case (single tip) would be regular breaks – it helps keep your mind from zoning out, inspires you, lets you take a breather, walk around and socialize which is great for physical and mental health.

    Ta-da!

      Murlu,

All I could say is wow, really impressed. I think this is really going to benefit a lot of people and I hope others read this. You’ve inspired me to be even healthier now :)

Well so far you have a lot of luck on contests here, maybe Random.org will help you out again this time. Enjoy!

  • http://experimentsinpassiveincome.com Moon Hussain

I think, no matter how hard it is, you NEED to put an exercise plan in action. For all the hours sitting in front of your computer lacks you of your healthy. Plain unhealthy!

I’m curious about these mice now. Or mouse. RT.

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Couldn’t agree more. However if you’re still on the computer for too long you could easily develop repetitive strain injuries.

Awesome, well its one mouse for each of the 3 winners. Was my phrasing confusing?

      Thanks!

Haha, went a little overkill with the comment but just figure I’d help out :P

I mean, believe me, I’m not in the best of shape but the good thing is that for the last few years, despite always being on the computer, I’ve kept a steady weight and even lost a belt size because of avoiding snacks and regularly stepping away from the computer every few hours :)

If you don’t lose any, at least you don’t have to gain any :P

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

      Haha ya, its great.

That’s awesome, I hear you 100% on that. I go to the gym a ton which helps no matter how long I’m on the computer for.

  • Meir

I sit on an exercise ball. First it’s suppose to be good for your back and second, since it is not that easy, it forces me to get up about every 10 minutes and move around. By the way this is common practice at Google and other high tech companies.

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Interesting, I did not think of that. If Google does it then I respect that practice :)

  • http://www.bloggingaccess.com/about Felix Albutra

I am a computer technician at the same time an internet cafe attendant and because of that, I am able to do full-time blogging since I don’t usually go far-away from my keyword because of my job.

But still I made myself physically and mentally fit and healthy. So here are my tips that might can help you.

    1. Exercise early in the morning.

After getting up from my bed, I usually do some breathing exercise like inhale and exhale.

After that, I will do some stretching then sweating. Sometimes, I also jugged around to increase my stamina and strengthen my leg muscles because you seems always setting for most of the day.

    2. While in your computer.

If you are in front of your computer, you can also do some stretching every 2-3 hours because you might get stiff and tired of just setting in your chair. In doing this, you must stand-up and also stretch your legs and exercise your lower muscles for 10-15 minutes.

Another thing is that, most computer users made a habit of eating snacks usually junk foods. So please avoid doing that. Also do some eye and facial exercises.

    3. Lye Down.

When you lye down, your blood will flow fairly in your whole body. This way, your blood won’t get stocked on a certain portion of your body because you are always setting.

    MENTAL EXERCISES:

Most bloggers used to always think of something that they can use and share to their blogs. Because of that, you might get brain stress.

Sometimes, you can’t think of some great ideas because your brain is very tired.

So here are some tips that I also used when I am on my computer everyday.

    1. Close your eyes and empty your mind. Don’t think of anything so your brain rest well.

    2. You can also listen to music while closing your eyes. This way, you can feel a relaxing aura that will make you feel better.

    In The End…

So, that’s it! There are maybe other ways to do this. If you have your own exercising routine, share it with us. This is really a good help to stay healthy.

    Thanks…

    - Felix

      Felix,

This is the second “wow” comment. Great template (thanks Murray for coming up with it first) separating physical from mental makes it very easy to understand. Thanks so much for sharing these great ideas.

Oh… I forgot something very useful. Please use an eye-gear to get rid of harmful radiation.

Because this is my biggest mistake that I’ve done in my more than 2 years of using computers.

Now, I am suffering an eye defect. Though I already used an anti-radiation eye glass, I still feel some pain in my eyes while I am in front of the computer.

      I hope this will help.

      - Felix

      • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Interesting, never thought about that. Thanks for sharing Felix, it really did.

Sure, I really think it will help. Awesome, I’m glad to hear that.

Thanks for stopping by like usual :)

  • http://www.abhiii.com/blog/ Abhi

This is what I suggest from my own experience:

    1) Exercise every morning. Do some jogging because while working, you’re legs aren’t really doing any job.

    2) Try and rest you your foots on an angular surface while sitting on you chair.

    3) And most importantly, the height of the table where your monitor & keyboard are should be comfortable enough to avoid you from using any extra muscle in you neck or hand.

These are pretty simple things one can look into. They not only make you comfortable but also help increase your productivity… ;)

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Thanks for sharing Abhi, all of these are superb tips, going to keep them in mind more often and I hope others do also.

  • Yael

    Wow! This is great giveaway!!!
    What I do is this:
    1.A quick meditation each morning
( just a simple relaxation and breathing exersize)
    2. Yoga!! (at least twice a week)I just love it! Works so great on all the stiff muscles..
    3. Decide on specific work hours ( for those who work from home)
and always try to do something active after work,
    usually a short walk.

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Thanks, I also think it is :)

For sure, my Mom is a yoga teacher, so I understand what you mean.

  • http://www.throwingabrick.com Roy Scribner

Ben, without question the best way to stay healthy while slaving away on the computer is a “healthy” supply of Rockstar!

Oh wait…you really mean healthy? I have to take a walk, which gets the blood flowing again and gives my eyes a rest, from staring at the monitor. I can neither confirm, nor deny, that random dancing might also be involved (if I’m writing particularly well, that day).

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Roy, hmm not so sure about that. Never heard of a “healthy energy drink.”

Random dancing is a nice practice. I’m sure you do it quite often, hopefully, you’re writing goes great every day!

To stay Healthy, i think you need to exercise the body, eat good food and use the pareto principle so as to get things done quickly :D

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

For sure, that’s the basic principle.

Not a contestant, but do have 2cents. ;)

This is interesting; never heard of an ergonomic mouse.

My mouse PAD with the gel writs rest and an optical mouse work quite well.

    Good luck every one!

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

      Ok, too bad.

Yeah it is, I’ve used it before, really cool product. Enjoy :)

Drop dumbbells by your chair and do arm curls every 20 minutes.

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

I guess that’s good for your arms in some respect. But what about your legs, eyes, wrists etc…?

      • http://juniorbiz.com Nick

Curls for the girls, Ben. Curls for the girls ;) .

        • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Haha, gotcha, I’m on it already!

Nice giveaway, unlike others this giveaway is little different. For healthy working, plan your work and work for limited hours, as your working from home, dont sit for 20 hours, just plan and work for 8 hours and rest time spend with family and work out and keep your body fit and healthy.

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Thanks. Yeah for sure, I like that, I think that’s very important for everyone to do.

  • http://www.glosonblog.com Gloson

    1. Make sure your backbone is straight and your chest is out when you sit. – Once, I had a chair that is too high and a table that’s too low. So I had to bend my back.

After 7 days, I felt pain in my back when I’m poked, and the back muscles are all “crackly” when you knead them (actually, when my cat kneads them) :P . This didn’t happen before.

In conclusion, 7 days of bending your back makes one weak. ;-)

So, make sure your back is straight and your chest is out when you sit. Adjust the height of your table/chair to fit you.

    2. Drink loads of water! – I assume that when you work at a computer, the room that you are in is air-conditioned, right? Air-conditioners dehydrates you. So, drink a lot of water! :)

    3. Exercise every morning and evening in a park – When you exercise, your mind and your body are refreshed. It is much better to do this in a park because there are plenty of oxygen and a peaceful scenery. This will not only make you healthier, but more productive! =)

    4. Take frequent showers! – When you take a shower, you help your blood circulate faster and that will make you even more awake and active.

Oil, dust, and dead skin cells on your body that are preventing the pores from breathing will be washed away, making you more active.

So, when you are zleepy… take a shower! =)

But if you can’t take a shower, from my experience, washing your face helps a lot too.

    Hope my tips helped! :)

    Cheers!
    Gloson :-)

Awesome tips Gloson. I’m loving these mini-posts and I hope that in the future other people benefit from these as much as I am now.

      So glad that you entered.

      Thanks :)

I try to get into regular breaks. Just like when you were in school, take 5 minutes or so every hour. Don’t use that 5 minutes to check NFL.com or read the news. Get up and walk around. Get the blood flowing a little bit.

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

For sure, anything to get the blood running is helpful.

  • http://www.shopping-cart-reviews.com/blog/ Mark

My tip is pretty simple, not exciting, but sometimes it’s all about the basics, not the sexy stuff. Simply: get up and stretch once an hour. If you forget, there’s heaps of programs (and firefox extensions) that can be set to remind you periodically. Does a world of good.

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Definitely, I like the idea of having extensions and plugins reminding you to do it, sounds like a great idea.

  • http://www.itarsenal.com Rob

Try a stability ball (those yoga looking ones) as your chair for a few weeks…a great core workout!

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Awesome, that’s what my Dad uses, works well for him :)

  • Adam Green

I like taking my laptop to the park and do work there. or hook up my treadmill laptop stand (http://bit.ly/cSjzb1) and run while working. Helps loads :)

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Great ideas, must be tough though to run and work at the same time.

  • freddy valliste

I think that stayng healty is all in our heads. Just be positive and life wont beat you :)

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Maybe, but physically sitting around at the computer all day can be very damaging without following some of these tips.

  • Mikkel “DaneBlogger” Juhl

    Hi..

Whenever I spend more than 3 hours at the computer I tend to take a short break.

However I never really spend a lot of time in front of my computer..

But whenever I do.. I do this:

To get the day started I run 4 kilometers (around 2.4 miles) – which approximately takes 21 minutes give or take 2 minutes.. In that way I am fresh and I feel good about myself and then I can work, work and work.

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

      Hey,

Great. I love that you run, so do I, it makes me feel so good :)

  • Jon

My tip is pretty easy to follow. I keep a resistance band on my desk and when I take a break I make sure to do a couple exercises with it

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

      Great idea Jon, thanks.
