Top 10 most Annoying Facebookers and Twitterers

As all social media addicts know, there are groups of very annoying Facebook and Twitter users out there. They spam, promote, abuse and do all kinds of annoying things. Our job should be to recognize them and hopefully stop in order to make our social media experience more pleasant for everybody. Here are the top 10 of them, 5 are types of Facebookers and 5 are types of Twitterers.

Twitterers:

1. Twitter spammer
The worst of all: the Twitter spammer. I can’t tolerate those twitter bots and spammers that will send out twits, and even replies with annoying messages like these: “@entrepreneurpro You can get 100 followers a day using http://yumurl.com/p74ZY6.” I don’t want to spammed constantly with similar scams!

2. The twitless twitterer
Then there are those twitterers who don’t twit at all but have followers. They shouldn’t be able to take up the precious twitter vanity links. And the people that follow them clearly don’t help either by supporting these wasters.

3. Celebrity twit
No matter how many millions of followers celebrities have I don’t want to follow them. I don’t care what their PR firm has to tell me. And I think that it’s sad that people like Britney Spears, Shaquille O’Neill and many others have millions of followers. For all we know there’s a much more interesting twitterer out there with only 10 followers.

4. Auto DM’er
I think that we could all agree that those people who send auto direct messages after you follow them are very annoying. For God’s sake I have 4,328 unread direct messages! The links to their sites, mafia invitations, and spam are all incredibly annoying that I don’t ever look at my messages any more.

5. Self Promoter
This may sound a little hypocritical because I find that promoting through twitter is very valuable. But I know that some people dislike it when people constantly promote blogs, sites and products on Twitter.

Facebookers:

6. Over Facebooker
Every time I go on Facebook I’ll see the same 30 people online in my chat window. Without a doubt they spend way too much time on Facebook and it shows. You’ll see them commenting, liking, posting everywhere and way too much.

7. Stalker
Yes there are stalkers on Facebook. They could be your friends or some random person. They’ll send you strange messages, constantly look at your profile, or even just comment way too much on your Facebook. This is why I wish that there was a real way to see who’s looked at your profile like on LinkedIn.

8. Facebook link’er
Basically like a self promoter on twitter, these people will post links on your wall or groups in order to promote themselves. Once is fine, but repeatedly doing this is just spam.

9. Friending abuser
As I mentioned in a previous post, those people who add too many people really don’t have that many friends in real life. Friending constantly is plain annoying.

10. Never ending inviter
I can’t take those people who will invite you to random events, groups and stupid apps. Such as:
“Howdy friend! How’d you like to be neighbors? Come join me in FarmVille, where you can grow delicious fruits and vegetables on your very own farm!”
Or
“Extreme Makover: Vending Machine Edition
Sunday, November 8th, 12:00am at…
You have been invited by …”
I’m not interested in growing my own farm on Facebook, or redesigning a vending machine!

What are your thoughts? Any suggestions, disagreements?

I agree with all of these. It is amazing how many people can be so annoying!

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Yeah, especially spammers, that really gets to me.

  • Alex Ainsberg

So true. Some people get a little carried away and it is just bothersome.

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

      I’m glad you agree Alex.

  • Phaoloo

I hate Twitter spammers and auto DMer. Recently they always send scam links to my DM messages and some are trying to steal my account.

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

I dont even check my Direct Messages, I have about 5,000 unread ones now.

I agree with everything you said. I think the promoters do themselves a great harm when they do the promotion too much. Perhaps they should try to share relevant information, articles, research findings etc and try to initiate serious discussions instead of doing the annoying ‘in your face’ kind of promotion…

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Definitely, its counter productive, unless used wisely.

  • http://www.freemanlegacyllc.com Ms. Freeman

I definitely agree that spammers are a pain in the neck. I too barely read my DM box for all the mafia war invites and someone telling me I should send them a give. It’s ridiculous.

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Ha, mafia wars, verifications, links, spam etc. it never ends!

  • http://freebloghelp.com Gabe | freebloghelp.com

    Everyone’s a “stalker” on FB!

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

I don’t know about everyone, but MySpace for sure…

  • tony ramirez

“I’m not interested in growing my own farm on Facebook”
lol I don’t know how many times I’ve received a request to build a farm. It does get pretty annoying!

    • http://www.ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Haha, yeah I dont how its possible that millions of people are playing Farmville!

  • http://www.worthytips.com/ Arafat Hossain Piyada

I don’t know when I last check my DM, I treat them as a spam box.

Recently a friend of mine in Facebook reached the highest Friend limit(5000) and ask me how she can get more. I just ask her a simple question, do you ever see 10% of your friends profile and the answer is no. Another bullshit in Facebook is constant annoying invitation and cause link as you say. But I yet use this two service to stay connected with good people and promote good things.

    Hello Ben,

Really enjoyed reading your article and couldn’t agree with you more. I too find the auto DM’s most annoying, especially the ones that say “so-and-so sent you a gift–you should send them one back”. I am guilty of one of the points you brought up. I have lots of followers but don’t tweet very much…can’t find the time to spend on Twitter.

By the way, this is my first time here and I’m very impressed with your blog and the content. I’ll certainly be a regular reader:-)

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Glad you agree Robert. Thanks for joining the community, I hope you continue to comment and read posts, it will benefit everyone tremendously. Thanks again!

  • http://www.makemoneydynamo.com Jason Pereira

The Auto-DMing is the worst. DM-ing used to be an awesome way to interact personally, now you can’t even read them cos of the amount of spam you get through there. :(

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

I think we could all agree that DM’s have become 100% spam. Thanks for commenting Jason.

  • http://athomewithheather.com Heather Masson

    Hi Ben –

Thanks for the invite to your blog.

I really agree with you on all of these points. I think both Twitter, and Facebook can be very valuable tools to spread your message, it’s sad how many people abuse and spam though.

I try to use these sites as a way to promote other blogs and friends, as well as some self-promo. Someone once mentioned a rule of 1 out of 5-10 tweets being to promote your own material… I think that’s fair.

    Great Post!

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

      Hi,
No problem, glad you stopped by. 1 in 10 posts sounds fair, I think I’m way above that though, sorry everybody! Ill try my hardest to cut down on the self promoting…

  • http://www.ballinmycourt.com DetroitRich

I agree, but sadly, I’m guilty of a few of these.

    • http://www.ben-lang.com Ben Lang

It’s ok we all are. We just have to try harder to prevent it…

  • Rajesh Kanuri

I agree with all of your points.. spamming is one of the major problem in twitter these days..

    • http://www.ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Yup its true, hopefully they’ll crack down on that more in the future.

  • http://ericasays.com Erica Mueller

Hey Ben!! Thanks for visiting my blog and shooting me an email! I came over here right away to see your site, and I’m loving it!

    Re: this post.

Oh, gawd!! You have no idea how fed up I get with people who do all of the above! I just cleaned out my Facebook friends about 15 minutes ago… ya know, purging the ones who do nothing but invite me to fan their pages or add some application.

Ya know, of all the above, self promoting bothers me the least. I figure the person is at least tweeting/fb’ing something they think is of value or they wouldn’t have written it in the first place. Yes, it can be over done, but for the most part, I’m ok with it. It’s those how to make money spammers and DM’ers that make me want to punch the computer screen!!

    • http://www.ben-lang.com Ben Lang

      Hi
      Thanks for dropping by!

Glad you enjoyed this post. Self promoting is the least of the offences, its fine as long as its not overdone… Ya those DM’ers and spammers also make me want to the hit the computer :)

Hope you continue to be a part of this blog’s community.

  • http://techgenuine.com Ricky

What I learn from my blogging experience is that twitter and facebook is a great way to drive the traffic to your blog and this is the reason why so many people indulge in such malpractice.

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

I agree, I can admit that I self promote myself on Twitter quite a bit, I’m trying to cut down though…

  • Shonika Proctor

    Oh snaps…

I was thinking that you were actually going to actually name THE MOSY ANNOYING people in your post, lol.

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Oh lol, that wouldn’t have been so nice…

  • http://technascent.com/ Uttoran Sen

spam is a problem through the internet, hope twitter gets a bit strict on the spammers, that will make life easier for the rest of us…

    • http://www.ben-lang.com Ben Lang

      I second that ;)

  • http://b6s.net Anne @ b6s.net

Excellent list. My pet peeve is the Facebook invitations. Maybe someone should start a farm burning application?

Ha, farm buring, I also hate invitations with a passion.

  • http://moralde.com/ James Moralde

Ha ha ha. I can totally relate with these. These are the reasons that had me stay away from these apps for sometime. I only go there when it really is necessary or I’m bored as hell and could tolerate stupidity.

I agree with some of what is said above and want y’all to know that basically these people are even more annoying than you originally believed. Because it is possible to play games and NOT be an obnoxious spammer.

I *sheepishly* admit to having both a Mafia Wars and Farmville account. However, in my own defense, I chose NOT to publish every time I do something on there. And, I only send invites to other people I am certain are playing the game already.

    Just saying… :=)

  • http://www.icttrends.com Suresh Khanal

Its so funny that you hate those facebook members who are found always online. Is this not your jealousy?

Cheer up! The rest category, I too hate. No doubt.

What I hate most are the twitter spammers and ad tweeters, especially the teeth whitening ads. I’m not on Facebook much so I don’t know much about those who cause annoyance there :) .

The teeth whitening ones are the best! They always tell me not to pay for teeth whitening and then they say “for only $5 get your teeth whitened”. It makes me laugh. They are definitely the most annoying though.

  • camerabags

ROFL, this is so funny. The problem I am having though is that I fit some of the descriptions. It is ok, I am aloud to laugh at myself, right?

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Glad you think so. Hmm you might want to try to make yourself not fit these categories lol.

  • http://GetYourBizSavvy.com Alex

I actually like Shaquille O’Neal a lot. His tweets are really from him and they’re hilarious.

    • http://ben-lang.com Ben Lang

Interesting, I doubt that it’s actually him tweeting though.

      • http://GetYourBizSavvy.com Alex

It actually is. He’s been interviewed and he talks about it all the time. One of the few.

you forgot the “philosopher” facebooker people that always have some kind of profound status update that they really copied from someone else. or people that are always making life philosophy facebook statuses but than are always unhappy and complaining about life statuses on the flipside cant stand them! haha

    • http://epiclaunch.com Ben Lang

Haha, true, can’t stand them either.
